NYC electrical rules

What the law requires for electrical work

Electrical is the trade where hiring the wrong person costs the most. These are the rules from NYC Buildings.

Licensed electrical contractors only

NYC DOB requires electrical installations to be performed by DOB-licensed electrical contractors.

Most work needs a permit

An electrical permit is required for most electrical work, and filings are submitted in DOB NOW: Build.

Owners share the risk

If electrical work is done without a permit, DOB says the building owner, as well as the person who did the work, may face violations, summonses, and fines.

A home improvement license is not enough

The DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license does not cover electrical work. Electrical needs its own DOB license.
